Procedure
To a solution of benzhydryl 7-tert-butoxycarbonylamino-3-(1-methylpyrrolidinio)methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylate iodide (4.42 g) in a mixture of dichloromethane (12 ml) and anisole (4.4 ml) was added trifluoroacetic acid (8.8 ml) under ice-cooling. After stirring for 30 minutes at room temperature, the reaction mixture was gradually poured into diisopropyl ether. The resultant precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with diisopropyl ether and dried over phosphorus pentoxide to give trifluoroacetic acid salt of 7-amino-3-(1-methyl-1-pyrrolidinio)methyl-3-cephem-4-carboxylic acid iodide (2.51 g).
