p-Toluenesulfonic acid (152 mg, 0.80 mmol) and 4-methoxybenzaldehyde dimethylacetal (2.9 g, 16.0 mmol) was added to a solution of (R)-1,3-dihydroxytetradecane (1.85 g, 8.0 mnuol) in dimethylformamide (20 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was diluted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was successively washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogencarbonate solution and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column using cyclohexane:ethyl acetate=9:1 as the eluant to give the desired product (2.78 g, yield 99%).
