Procedure

3-(3-(Biphenyl-4-yloxymethyl)phenyl)acrylic acid ##STR3## To a solution of 4-phenylphenol (6.13 g, 36 mmol) in dry N,N-dimethyl-formamide (100 ml) kept under an atmosphere of nitrogen, sodium hydride (1.73 g, 43.2 mmol, 60% dispersion in mineral oil) was added in portions and the reaction mixture was stirred until gas evolution ceased. 3-Bromobenzyl bromide (10.0 g, 39.61 mmol) was added in portions and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 h. To the reaction mixture water (50 ml) was added. The precipitate was filtered off and washed with water (3×100 ml), 96% ethanol (2×30 ml), diethyl ether (2×80 ml), and dried in vacuo at 50° C. for 18 h affording 11.64 g (95 %) of 4-(3-bromo-benzyloxy)biphenyl as a solid.
