Procedure

4-Hydroxy-2,2-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-benzofuran-6-carboxylic acid methyl ester (3e) was dissolved in DMF (50 mL). K2CO3 (6.48 g, 46.9 mmol) and benzyl bromide (2.80 mL, 23.6 mmol) were added. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight, quenched with H2O (150 mL), and extracted with EtOAc (2×150 mL). The organic layers were dried over MgSO4 and concentrated to give a white solid (7.18g, 98% yield) which was used as it is for the next step. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.34-7.46 (m, 5 H) 7.21 (s, 1 H) 7.08 (s, 1 H) 5.13 (s, 2 H) 3.90 (s, 3 H) 3.02 (s, 2 H) 1.49 (s, 6 H); LCMS for C19H20O4 m/z 313.20 (M+H)+.
