Procedure
A mixture of DL-N-(2-quinoxalinyl)-4-methoxyphenylglycine ethyl ester (160 mg, 0.48 mmol), potassium carbonate (328 mg 2.37 mmol), methanol (1 mL) and water (3 mL) was stirred at reflux for 16 h. After neutralization with aqueous acetic acid the product was extracted with 10% methanol/ethyl acetate, the organic layer was dried over magnesium sulfate and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was dissolved in methylene chloride (5 mL) and treated with diisopropylethylamine (0.16 mL, 1.0 mmol) and carbonyldiimidazole (405 mg, 2.5 mmol). After 3 h at room temperature the product was filtered and washed with ether to afford 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-imidazo-[1,2-a]-quinoxalin-1(5H)-one (Compound 1) as orange crystals melting at 305°-306° C.
