A solution of 0.59 ml of methyl malonyl chloride in 5 ml of THF was added dropwise at -10° C. to a solution of 731 mg of p-(2-aminoethyl)benzonitrile and 1.39 ml of triethylamine in 10 ml of THF. The mixture was then allowed to warm to room temperature, and was then poured into ice water and adjusted to pH 2 with 1N hydrochloric acid. The THF was evaporated and the aqueous extracts were extracted with ethyl acetate. After drying and concentrating, 380 mg of methyl (p-cyanophenethyl)malonamate, m.p. 125° C., were obtained.
