Procedure

To a solution of 4,5-bis(bromomethyl)pyridine-2-carbonitrile from Step B (2.56 g, 8.83 mmol) and 1,3-dihydro-2H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridin-2-one (1.18 g, 8.83 mmol, Marfat et al (1987) Tetrahedron Lett. 28, 4027) in THF (120 mL) and H2O (60 mL) was added lithium hydroxide monohydrate (1.11 g, 26.5 mmol). After 20 min, the reaction mixture was poured onto water (100 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (3×100 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography, eluting with a gradient of CH2Cl2:MeOH:NH4OH—100:0:0 to 95:5:1, to give the title compound. MS: m/z=263 (M+1).
