Procedure
A mixture of ethyl 2-[1-(2′-cyanobiphenyl-4-yl)ethyl]-3-oxohexanoate (4.80 g), N-(1,4-dioxaspiro[4.5]dec-8-yl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-amine (1.50 g), 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (0.2 mL) and N,N-diethylaniline (20 mL) was stirred at 180° C. overnight, allowed to cool and poured into 1 M hydrochloric acid (100 mL), and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound as a pale-yellow oil (1.50 g, 43%).
