Ethyl 3-[4′-formyl-2-(3-methoxypropoxy)biphenyl-4-yl]propanoate (1 g, 2.7 mmol) was dissolved in dichloroethane (20 mL). At 0° C., acetic acid (0.02 mL, 0.4 mmol) was added, followed, by N-methylpiperazine (0.3 g, 3 mmol) and sodium triacetoxyborohydride (0.86 g, 4 mmol) portionwise. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. At 0° C., saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate was added. The aqueous layer was extracted three times with dichloromethane. The combined organic layers were washed with brine and water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and evaporated under reduced pressure to yield 0.98 g (80%) of the desired product as a brown oil used in the following step without further purification.
