To a solution of isopropyl[7-(1-ethylpropyl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzimidazol-1-yl]acetate (5.29 g, 17.4 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (350 mL) was added N-chlorosuccinimide (2.55 g, 19.1 mmol) and 2,2′-azobisisobutyronitrile (86 mg, 0.522 mmol), and the mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 3 days. The reaction mixture was diluted with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and extracted with dichloromethane (X2). The combined organic layer was washed with water (X1) and brine (X1), dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography eluting with a 10-50% ethyl acetate/hexane gradient mixture to give 3.83 g (11.3 mmol, 65.0%) of the title compound as a colorless solid.
