Procedure

A mixture of 1.2 g (3.2 mmol) of diol 26 and 0.05 g of p-toluenesulfonic acid monohydrate in 100 mL of CH2Cl2 at 0° C. was treated with 3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (1.1 ml, 12 mmol) and the solution was stirred for 2 h at 0° C. After pouring into saturated NaHCO3, phases were separated and the organic layer was dried over MgSO4, filtered, concentrated, and purified by chromatography on silica gel (1/1, hexanes/EtOAc) to afford 1.1 g of 27 as a clear, colorless oil. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 8.04 (dd, J=7.0, 1.6, 1 H), 7.44 (m, 2 H), 7.12 (m, 1 H), 4.95 (dt, 1 H), 4.8 (m, 1 H), 4.7 (m, 2 H), 4.15-3.80 (m, 4 H), 3.5 (m, 2 H), 2.82 (dd, J=10.8, 1 H), 2.55 (m, 2 H), 2.3 (m, 1 H), 2.1-1.3 (m, 6 H).
