A sample of 1-benzylpiperidine-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester is reduced to 1-benzylpiperidine-4-hydroxymethyl by treatment with lithium aluminum hydride (LiAlH4) in THF. This material is converted to its methane sulfonate by reaction with methanesulfonyl chloride.
