Sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil; 14.4 mg, 0.36 mmol) was added to a solution of tert-butyl (3R,7R)-2-oxo-7-phenylazepan-3-ylcarbamate (100 mg, 0.33 mmol) and cyclopropylmethyl bromide (0.08 mL, 0.82 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (1 mL) at 0 □C, and the mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature. After 6 h, the reaction was quenched with water and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water (3×), saturated brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated. Purification by silica gel chromatography (10% ethyl acetate/hexanes→50% ethyl acetate/hexanes) gave the title compound (82 mg). MS 359 (M+1).
