Procedure

A mixture of 212 g. of N-hydroxyphthalimide, 132 g. of triethylamine, 160 g. of 1-bromopropane and 500 ml. of dimethylformamide is stirred overnight. The reaction mixture is poured into 4.5 liters of water and is stirred at ice temperature for 11/2 hours. The solid is removed by filtration, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give N-propxyphthalimide, m.p. 51°-3° C.
