To a solution of (S)-2-(2-Amino-phenylamino)-propionic acid tert-butyl ester (1.5 g, 6.3 mmol) in THF (10 mL) was added CDI (1.03 g, 6.3 mmol). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. When the reaction was completed, the reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate and washed with water. The organic phase was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to afford 1.6 g of the desired product as an oily residue. The LCMS indicated only 40% purity; however, this product was used for the next reaction without further purification. LCMS (ESMS): m/z 263.38 (M+H+).
