To a mixture of 4-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-3-(2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl)-butyric acid methyl ester (137 mg, 0.47 mmol) and (1,4-dimethyl-1H-indol-3-ylmethyl)-trimethylammonium iodide (225 mg, 0.65 mmol) in DMF (2.5 mL) was added K2CO3 (200 mg, 1.45 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 100° C. for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool to room temperature, diluted with EtOAc (50 mL) and washed with H2O (50 mL×3). The organic layer was dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated. The resulting residue was purified by CombiFlash with 50% EtOAc in Hexane as the eluent to afford the desired 3-[3-(1,4-dimethyl-3H-indol-3-ylmethyl)-2-oxo-2,3-dihydro-benzimidazol-1-yl]-4-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-butyric acid methyl ester (50 mg, 24%).
