Procedure

Wash 29 g (2 equiv.) of NaH (60% dispersion in oil) with heptane (2×80 mL). Combine the washed Nail with 60 mL of DMF, then slowly add 11.0 g (68.8 mmol) of diethyl malonate while keeping the reaction temperature below 30° C. Stir the resulting mixture for 30 min to form a solution of diethyl sodiomalonate.
