Procedure
A solution of 1-isobutyl-2-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-methyl-5-formylimidazole (1.6 g), N-(diphenylmethyl)piperazine (1.3 g), and titanium tetraisopropoxide (2 ml) were stirred for 1 hour at room temperature. Ethanol (10 ml) was added, and the resultant solution was stirred for a further 30 minutes. Sodium cyanoborohydride (330 mg) was then added, and the mixture stirred overnight. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, and the residue partitioned between methylene chloride/water. The organic phase was separated, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated. The residue was flash-chromatographed on silica gel, eluting with ethyl acetate/n-heptane (1/2), to yield 1.0 g of 1-diphenylmethyl-4-[(1-isobutyl-2-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)-4-methylimidazol-5-yl)methyl]piperazine. Treatment with anhydrous hydrochloric acid in ethanol converted the base to its trihydrochloride salt, m.p. 200° C.
