Procedure
A mixture of 1-(2-amino-3-methoxycarbonylphenyl)butan-2-one ethylene ketal (37) (0.7 g) (prepared, e.g., as described in Preparation 25), 2'-(cyano)biphenyl-4-yl-methylbromide (0.826 g) and potassium carbonate (0.41 g) in dimethylformamide (20 ml) was heated at 80°-90° C. for 16 hours under an inert atmosphere. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue obtained was diluted with ethyl acetate (100 ml), washed twice with cold water, and then brine. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel, eluting with 20% ethyl acetate/hexane, to give 1-[2-(2"-cyanobiphenyl-4'-ylmethylamino)-3-methoxycarbonylphenyl]butan-2-one ethylene ketal (0.52 g), a compound of Formula (38), as an oil.
