5-(Cbz-amino)-4-oxopentanoic acid (2.66 g; 10.0 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of caesium carbonate (1.64 g; 5.0 mmol) in de-ionized water (40 mL). After the evolution of CO2 ceased, the mixture was frozen with liquid nitrogen and freeze-dried overnight. 4.2 g (˜100%) product was obtained (pale tan solid). The product was used in 8c without further purification.
