Procedure

To a solution of 2,6-difluoro-3-(3-fluorophenyl)benzoic acid (765 mg, 3.03 mmol, 1.1 eq) and oxalyl chloride (1.05 g, 8.5 mmol, 3.0 eq) in DCM (20 mL) was added DMF (0.1 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 h, then concentrated in vacuo. The residue obtained was dissolved in THF (5 mL) and added dropwise to a solution of 3-amino-2,4-difluoro-phenol (intermediate X(a)) (400 mg, 2.76 mmol, 1.0 eq) in THF (25 mL) at 0° C. over 10 min. After addition, the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 3 h. The resulting mixture was poured into water and extracted with EtOAc. The organic extract was washed with water and brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered, evaporated in vacuo and purified by column chromatography (EtOAc:petroleum ether, 0:1 to 1:4) to give the title compound as a yellow solid (600 mg, 61%).
