To a solution of 2-bromothiophenol (10.50 g, 55.87 mmol) in dry DMF (50 mL) under nitrogen is added cautiously potassium carbonate (9.2 mL, 61.46 mmol, 1.10 equiv.). Once bubbling has subsided, 2-bromo-1,1-diethoxyethane (8.46 g, 61.46 mmol, 1.10 equiv.) is added to the mixture and stirred for 2 h at room temperature. The resulting suspension is poured onto 200 mL of iced water and extracted with diethyl ether (3×50 mL). The organic layers are washed with brine, dried over MgSO4 to afford after solvent removal the title compound as a viscous orange oil, used without further purification.
