Procedure

N,N-Dimethylformamide and benzyl bromide (2.3 ml, 19 mmol) were added sequentially to ethyl 3-[N-(t-butoxy carbonyl)-N-methylamino]-3-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propionate (5.10 g, 16 mmol) obtained from Example 16a and potassium carbonate (3.27 g, 24 mmol) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was partitioned between water and ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and saturated aqueous sodium chloride solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by chromatography on a silica gel column to afford the desired compound (5.57 g).
