Procedure

A mixture of 2-(4′-tert-butyl-biphenyl-3-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (0.28 g, 0.63 mmol) in methanol (7 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (5 mL), lithium hydroxide hydrate (0.27 g, 6.3 mmol) in water (0.5 mL) was stirred at 60° C. for 12 h. The mixture was neutralized with a 3 N aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×50 mL), washed with water, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and then concentrated in vacuo to afford 2-(4′-tert-butyl-biphenyl-3-yl)-3,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline-6-carboxylic acid (0.18 g, 70%) as a white solid which was used for next step without further purification: LC/MS m/e calcd for C28H31NO2 (M+H)+: 414.6, observed: 414.1;
