Procedure
5 g of homopiperazine (0.05 mol) and 6 ml of dry DMF are charged to a fully equipped round-bottomed flask. The mixture is brought to 100° C. 1.65 g of 2-(4-methoxyphenylazo)-1,3-dimethyl-3H-imidazol-1-ium perchlorate are added over 20 min. The reaction mixture is maintained for 1 hour at 100° C. with stirring and then it is allowed to cool. The reaction mixture is then poured, with stirring, into 150 ml of ethyl acetate. A precipitate forms and it is separated from a gum. This precipitate is recovered by filtration and it is washed 3 times with ethyl acetate.
