Procedure
A mixture of 5-bromo-2-fluorobenzaldehyde (16.0 g, 78.6 mmol), cis-2,6-dimethylmorpholine (9.32 g, 80.9 mmol), and potassium carbonate (15.0 g, 108 mmol) in DMF (75 mL) is heated in a 120° C. oil bath for 14 hours. The mixture is diluted with MTBE (250 mL) and washed with water (4×200 mL). (Ethyl acetate is added as needed to maintain the homogeneity of the organic layer). The organics are filtered through a 1″ plug of silica gel and evaporated to give 21.5 g of brown solid. This material is approximately 90% pure as judged by HPLC and is used without further purification. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 10.11, 7.78, 7.75, 7.17, 3.77-3.86, 3.12, 2.56, 1.11.
