Procedure

To a solution of 4,5-di-(4-chlorophenyl)-1-methylimidazole (0.25 gm, 0.825 mmol) from Step B in THF (5 mL) cooled to −70° C. in a dry ice/acetone bath was added via syringe n-butyl lithium (1.6 N in hexanes, 0.62 mL, 1.0 mmol). The reaction was stirred at −70° C. for 30 min and then a solution of CBZ-Cl (0.42 mL, 1.65 mmol) in THF (2 mL) was added rapidly. The reaction was warmed to rt over 1 hr. The reaction was poured into an aq. sodium bicarbonate solution and then extracted twice with ethyl acetate. The organic layers were washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and evaporated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (15% ethyl acetate in hexanes) to provide the title compound as a white solid. HPLC/MS: 437 (M+1), 439 (M+3); Rt=4.37 min.
