Procedure

Sodium hydride (18g.; 60% w/w dispersion in oil, washed as described in Example 1) was stirred in dry dimethylformamide (300 ml.), and 1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1,2-dihydro-4-methyl-2-oxoquinoline (64.7 g.) was added, followed by diethyl oxalate (55 g.). The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2.5 hours with occasional external cooling to keep the temperature below 25° C. Ether (2 1.) was added, and the mixture was filtered. The solid residue was washed with ether (500 ml.), and then suspended in dimethylformamide (200ml.) nd acidified to pH 2 by the addition of concentrated hydrochloric acid. The resultant mixture was added to water (3 1.), and the mixture filtered, and the solid residue washed with water (2 1.), drained well, and crystallised from ethanol to give ethyl 1-(4-chlorobenzyl)-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinol-4-ylpyruvate, m.p. 180°-182° C.
