Procedure
2.0 g of sodium hydride was added to a mixture of 9.65 g of 2,6-dichloro-3-nitropyridine, 4.95 g of methyl glycolate and 100 ml of tetrahydrofuran at 0° C. The mixture was stirred at 0° C. for 4 hours. The reaction solution was poured into ice water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated saline, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated. The residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography to obtain 10.86 g of 6-chloro-2-(methoxycarbonyl)methoxy-3-nitropyridine.
