Procedure

2.0 g of 3-methyl-4,5-dihydro-1,4-benzoxazepin-5-one was dissolved in 120 ml of dimethylformamide, then 548 mg (1.2 equivalents) of 60% sodium hydride was added under ice cooling. This was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour, then 4.1 ml (3 equivalents) of 1,4-dibromobutane was added and the mixture was stirred for 3 hours. Ice water was added to the reaction solution and extraction was performed with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate extract was washed with saline, then dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off and the resultant crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=4:1) to obtain 3.0 g of the above-identified compound (yield 84%).
