Procedure
A solution of 15 ml of N,N-dimethylformamide containing 745 mg of methyl 3-(4-methoxymethoxyphenyl)-2-methanesulfonyloxypropionate, 310 mg of thiophenol and 390 mg of potassium carbonate was stirred at 50° C. for 0.5 hours, and ethyl acetate and water were added to the reaction mixture. Then, the ethyl acetate layer was separated and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate. The ethyl acetate layer was concentrated under reduced pressure, and the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate:hexane=1:4) to obtain 698 mg of the desired compound as a syrup.
