To a solution of methyl 7-ethyl-1H-indazole-5-carboxylate (252 mg, 1.23 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was added K2CO3 (550 mg, 3.98 mmol) and I2 (370 mg, 1.46 mmol). The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight. To this was then added 5% NaHSO3 (10 mL) followed by 1:1 EtOAc/THF (50 mL). The organic layer was isolated, dried over Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated. The solid was suspended in CH2Cl2, collected by filtration and dried to provide methyl 7-ethyl-3-iodo-1H-indazole-5-carboxylic acid (298 mg, 73%).
