Sodium hydride (2.2 g, 54 mmol) was added portionwise to an ice-cold solution of 3-bromo-5-chloro-1H-pyrrolo[2,3-b]pyridine (4) (10.5 g, 45 mmol) in dimethylformamide (70 ml) under nitrogen. Thirty minutes later, tosyl chloride (8.7 g, 46 mmol) was added to the reaction mixture and the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 18 h. The reaction mixture was hydrolysed with water (˜150 ml) and a brown solid was obtained by filtration and dried in vacuo to afford the title compound (14.8 g, 85%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) 2.4 (3H, s), 7.3-7.4 (2H, d), 7.8-7.9 (2H, 2s), 8.1-8.2 (2H, d), 8.4 (1H, s); MS (ES+) 387
