Procedure

4-Chloromethyl-5-methyl-1,3-dioxol-2-one (212 mg, 1.4 mmol, 1.0 eq.) was dissolved in dry DMF (2 mL) and cooled to 0° C. Dicesium carbonate (465 mg, 1.4 mmol, 1.0 eq.) was added and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes at 0° C. (2R,3R)-3-(BOC-amino)-2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyric acid (421 mg, 1.4 mmol, 1.0 eq.) was added and the mixture was stirred for 1 hour at 0° C. and then warmed to room temperature, while stirring. EtOAc (20 mL) was added and the mixture was saturated aqueous NaCl (100 mL) then vacuumed to dryness. The product was purified using reverse phase chromatography (10-70% MeCN gradient). Acid deprotection was accomplished by dissolving the product in 4N HCl in dioxane (10 mL). The product was then vacuumed to dryness, taken up in toluene and vacuumed to dryness again to yield the title compound as an HCl salt (0.3 g).
