A solution of 2,3-dichloro-5-nitro-pyridine (5 g, Synthesis, 1990 (6), 499-501), 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (2.6 g) and potassium carbonate (5.4 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (50 ml) was stirred at 80° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was poured into ice water. The precipitate was isolated by filtration and dried under high vacuum to afford 3-chloro-5-nitro-2-(2,2,2-trifluoro-ethoxy)-pyridine (5.65 g).
