Procedure

1,3-Dibromobenzene (7.48 g, 31.71 mmol), 4-pentyn-1-ol (6.40 g, 76.10 mmol), and bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) dichloride (445 mg, 0.63 mmol) was stirred in triethylamine (150 mL) under nitrogen for 5 min. Copper(I) iodide (61 mg, 0.32 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred for 18 hrs at 75° C. The mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered through a celite pad, rinsed with ethylacetate. The combined filtrate was evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was purified by column chromatography (chloroform:methanol 20:1) to afford 7.24 g of the title compound. Yield: 94%. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 1.85 (m, 4H), 2.53 (t, J=6.9 Hz, 4H), 3.81 (t, J=6.0 Hz, 4H), 7.16-7.31 (m, 3H), 7.42 (t, J=1.2 Hz, 1H) ppm; 13C NMR (75 MHz, CDCl3) δ 16.2, 31.6, 61.9, 80.6, 90.0, 124.0, 128.3, 130.8, 134.7 ppm.
