In dimethylformamide (DMF, 9 mL) was dissolved 3-nitro-7-hydroxyquinoline (800 mg, 4.24 mmol.). To the solution were added subsequently sodium hydride (168 mg, 4.24 mmol.) and 2-trifluoromethylbenzyl chloride (816 mg, 4.24 mmol.) under chilling with ice. The resulting mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. After the completion of reaction was confirmed, ethyl acetate and aqueous sodium sulfate were added. The ethyl acetate portion was recovered, washed with water, and dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane/ethyl acetate=4/1) to give 790 mg of the desired compound as a white crystalline product, yield 53%.
