To a solution of 2-cyclohexyl-5-nitro-1H-indole (5 g; 20.5 mmol) in DMF (100 ml) sodium hydride (50% suspension) (1 g, 20.5 mmol) was added; the mixture was left under stirring for 30 minutes, then ethyl iodide (2.5 ml; 30.8 mmol) in DMF (10 ml) was added dropwise and the resulting mixture was left under stirring at room temperature for 18 hours. The reaction mixture was poured in NaHCO3 (saturated solution, 100 ml) and stirred for 30 minutes. The solid was filtered under vacuum to give 2-cyclohexyl-1-ethyl-5-nitro-1H-indole (4.8 g) which was used without any further purification.
