HCl (55.5 g) and silica gel (55 g) were suspended in xylene (550 mL). The suspension was heated to reflux for 1 night. The reaction mixture was cooled to 65° C. and ethyl acetate (550 mL) was added. The silica gel was filtered off and washed with ethyl acetate (550 mL). The organic phase was evaporated. The crude product was dissolved in methanol (750 mL). The methanol was partly evaporated upon which crystallization of the product takes place. After cooling to 5° C. for 3 hours, the product was obtained by filtration. This yielded trans-11-chloro-2,3,3a,12b-tetrahydro-2-methyl-1H-dibenz[2,3:6,7]oxepino[4,5-c]pyrrol-1-one (IV) (47.8 g, 86%); mp 150.6° C.; 1H-NMR (400.13 MHz in CDCl3 relative to TMS) δ 3.03 (d, 3H), 4.03 (m, 1H), 3.53-3.65 (m, 2H), 3.82 (m, 1H), 7.01-7.28 (m, 6H), 7.87 (dd, 1H).
