Procedure
A solution of known 6-nitro-1H-indole (5 g, 31 mm) in dimethylformamide (DMF) (50 mL) was cooled to 0° C. and treated with NaH (1 g, 37m). After stirring at 0° C. for two hours, CH3I (2.3 mL, 37 mm) was added, and the reaction was stirred overnight while allowing to warm to room temperature. After pouring into H2O (500 mL), the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (EtOAc) (200 mL×4). The combined organic fractions were dried over MgSO4, filtered and evaporated. Purification by flash column chromatography afforded the 1-methyl-6-nitro-1H-indole (5.34 g, 97%).
