Procedure

To a stirring solution of 2-bromophenol (10.0 g, 57.8 mmol), and benzyl bromide (9.9 g, 57.8 mmol) in acetone (150 mL) was added K2CO3 (12.0 g, 86.7 mmol). After stirring at reflux for 4 h, the mixture was portioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried (MgSO4), filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, ethyl acetate/hexane) to yield the title compound as a colorless oil (15.2 g, 57.8 mmol). 1HNMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ7.62 (m, 1H), 7.54 (m, 2H), 7.45 (m, 2H), 7.37 (m, 1H), 7.28 (m, 1H), 6.98 (m, 1H), 6.91 (m, 1H), 5.17 (s, 2H).
