Procedure

A stirred solution of 3,4-dinitrophenol (1 g) in dimethylformamide (30 mL) was treated with benzyl bromide (723 μL) and potassium carbonate (1.13 g). The reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 24 hours and then partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The organic layer was washed with brine, then dried over magnesium sulfate and then evaporated. The residue was subjected to flash column chromatography on silica eluting with a mixture of ethyl acetate and hexane (1:4, v/v) to give 4-benzyloxy-1,2-dinitrobenzene (1.30 g) as a yellow solid. LC-MS (METHOD B): RT=3.31 minutes. 1HNMR [(CD3)2CO, ppm): δ 5.28 (s, 2H), 7.26-7.42 (m, 61), 7.57 (d, 1H), 8.12 (d, 1H).
