Procedure
To a suspension of NaH (50.5 mg, 2.00 mmol) in DMF (1.00 mL) was added 1-(3-hydroxyphenyl)ethanone (136 mg, 1.00 mmol) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 h. To this mixture was added a solution of 1-bromo-3-chloropropane (188 mg , 1.20 mmol) in DMF (0.500 mL). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 5 h. The resulting crude mixture was diluted with water (20 mL), the aqueous layer was extracted with CH2Cl2 (3×20 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (20 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by preparative TLC using hexane:EtOAc (4:1) to afford the desired product 1-[3-(3-chloropropoxy)phenyl]ethanone (235 mg, 55.2%): 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.7 (d, 1H, J=6.6 Hz), 7.52 (s, 1H), 7.25 (t, 1H, J=6.6 Hz), 7.01 (m, 1H), 4.11 (t, 2H, J=7.9 Hz), 3.69 (t, 2H, J=7.9 Hz), 2.61 (s, 3H), 1.95-1.92 (m, 2H).
