At −78° C., Lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (1.0 M in THF) (7.1 mL, 7.1 mmol) was added slowly to a solution of methyl 2-(trimethylsilyl)acetate (1.2 mL, 7.1 mmol) in THF (6 mL). It was maintained at −78° C. for 12 min. 5-(Benzyloxy)cyclobutabenzen-1(2H)-one (3.2) (0.88 g, 3.9 mmol) in THF (3 mL) was added in one portion. It was stirred at −78° C. and allowed to r.t. overnight. EtOAc (300 mL) was added and it was washed with brine and dried over Na2SO4. After removing solvent, the residue was purified by chromatography (silica gel, 1:6 EtOAc/hexane) to give 3.4 in 14% yield.
