To a mixture of (2S)-oxiran-2-ylmethanol (445 mg, 6.0 mmol), 5-methoxy-2-nitrophenol (1.02 g, 6.0 mmol) and triphenylphosphine (1.57 g, 6.0 mmol) in THF (10 mL) was added DEAD (0.95 mL, 6.0 mmol) in THF (5 mL) dropwise at 0° C. After addition was completed the ice bath was removed and the mixture was stirred at room temperature over night. The volatiles were removed in vacuo and the residue was purified by silica gel flash chromatography (0-40% ethyl acetate in petroleum spirit) to give the sub-title compound (820 mg).
