Procedure

To a solution of 4-(3-nitropyridin-4-yl)cyclohex-3-enyl methanesulfonate (1.0 equiv) in tetrahydrofuran (0.1 M) was added DBU (1.8 equiv.) at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt overnight. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate (200 mL), and washed with sat NaCl (30 mL). The organic was dried with MgSO4, filtered and concentrated. The residue was purified by column (5% methanol in 1:1 ethyl acetate and hexanes) to give 4-(cyclohexa-1,3-dienyl)-3-nitropyridine. LC/MS (m/z): MH+=203.2, Rt=0.85.
