Procedure

To a suspension of tert-butyl 1-(3-hydroxybutan-2-yl)-2-methyl-1H-indole-3-carboxylate (500 mg, 1.65 mmol) in THF (8 mL) was added sodium hydride (330 mg, 8.25 mmol) at 30° C. under N2. The reaction was stirred for 20 min. Then iodomethane (0.4 mL) was added and the reaction was stirred at 60° C. for 3 hrs. Then the mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with water and saturated aqueous NaHCO3. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluted with petroleum ether:ethyl acetate=80:1 to afford the title compound as a yellow solid which was used directly (400 mg, 76.8%).
