Procedure

A mixture of 15.0 g of 1-(2,4-dihydroxy-3-propylphenyl)ethanone, 15.0 g of ethyl 4-bromobutyrate, 16.0 g of anhydrous potassium carbonate in 200 ml of anhydrous dimethylformamide was stirred and heated at 75° C. for 24 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was purified by high pressure liquid chromatography using 2.5% ethyl acetate-toluene to yield 7.62 g of 4-(4-acetyl-3-hydroxy-2-propylphenoxy)butanoic acid ethyl ester as an oil.
