Procedure
A mixture of 1-(4-pyridyl)piperazine (4.05 g), 4-fluorobenzonitrile (3.00 g) and potassium carbonate (7.00 g) in N-methylpyrrolidone (25 ml) was heated at 80° C. with stirring for 18 hours. The solvent was then evaporated and the residue was partitioned between dichloromethane and water. The organic layer was washed with water, dried over magnesium sulphate and evaporated. The residue was crystallised from ethanol to give the title compound (1.80 g), m.p. 155°-158° C. Found: C,72.50; H,5.96; N,21.24. C16H16N4 requires: C,72.70; H,6.10; N,21.20%.
