To a solution of 9-(4-bromophenyl)-6,7-dihydro-5H-benzocycloheptene (2a, compound I, R3=H, X=Br, n=2) (12.38 g, 41 mmol) in DMF (30 mL) was added methyl acrylate (38.2 g, 444 mmol), triethylamine (29.0 g, 286 mmol), and bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) chloride (7.0 g, 10.0 mmol). The mixture was placed in a pressure bottle and heated at 100° C. for 4 days. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was chromatographed (silica gel, 7.5 to 15% EtOAc/hexanes) to give the ester (2b) as a white solid (11.4 g, 90%): 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.69 (d, J=15.7 Hz, 1H), 7.45 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 2H), 7.24 (m, 5H), 6.98 (m, 1H), 6.52 (t, J=7.3 Hz, 1H), 6.43 (d, J=15.7 Hz, 1H), 3.81 (s, 3H), 2.65 (t, J=7.0 Hz, 2H), 2.17 (m, 2H), 1.98 (m, 2H); APcI m/z: 346 (M+H+CH3CN+, 100%).
